Pack Overnighter on the USS Constellation

Saturday - Sunday October 11th-12th, 2008 @
"Baltimore’s historic and picturesque Inner Harbor"

Overnight programs provide an immersive, nineteenth-century, hands-on experience with a twentieth-century applicability that encourages team-work, problem solving, and learning. The USS Constellation Museum’s Overnight Adventure offers groups a unique opportunity to walk in the footsteps of sailors and learn about life aboard a mid-19th century, U.S. Navy warship. Young persons enlist as “powder monkeys,” the youngest members of Mr. Lincoln’s navy. Older participants (adults) become Landsmen. Through tours, hands-on-activities, Civil War-era meals, and a night in a hammock on the berth deck, overnight recruits “learn the ropes” and quickly develop both a working nautical vocabulary and a familiarity with the basics of life aboard a man-of-war. Just as importantly, they have fun!

Program includes: Ships tour, scavenger hunt, gun drill and more.

Pack Day Trip to Washington, DC

Saturday November 15th, 2008 @ "Washington, DC"
Arlington National Cemetery - Wreath laying ceremony at
the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers

Pack 936, in honor of Veterans Day, is scheduled to present a wreath to the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. The Tomb of the Unknown soldiers is the grave marker for those who died but could never be recovered or those whose remains that could never be identified. It is guarded at all times by a military detail to keep the memory of those who gave their life defending the Nation, and especially those who could never be returned to their families. While there are many National Cemeteries, Arlington has the significance of being right outside Washington DC. It is located in Arlington, VA on land that had belong to Robert E. Lee, the general of the South's Army of Virginia in the Civil War. The cemetery holds the remains of many soldiers, including a few Presidents, and generals. The Tomb of the Unknowns is protected by the Third United States Infantry 'The Old Guard'. The guards are changed through out the day, in a very formal ceremony. During April 1st to September 30th, the guard is changed every thirty minutes. During October 1st to March 31st, the guard is changed every hour, on the hour. While the whole cemetery grounds are sacred grounds, the Tomb of the Unknowns most so. It is a symbol for the entire nation to mourn those lost serving their country, but mostly for those that could never be returned to their families to properly bury and mourn.
